Targets

  • Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan aims to eliminate tuberculosis from India by 2025.
  • The Prime Minister has given a distinctive call to end TB in India, giving years ahead of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of 2030.
  • The Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan has been envisioned to bring together all community stakeholders to support those on TB treatment and accelerate the country’s progress towards TB elimination.
  • Ni-kshay Mitra initiative: The Ni-kshay Mitra initiative is also launched, which forms a vital component of the Abhiyaan.
  • Ni-kshay Mitra portal: The Ni-kshay Mitra portal provides a platform for donors to provide various forms of support to those undergoing TB treatment. The three pronged support includes
    • Nutritional
    • additional diagnostic
    • vocational support
  • Ni-kshay Mitras: The donors, called Ni-kshay Mitras, could be a wide range of stakeholders from elected representatives, political parties, to corporates, NGOs, and individuals.

TB in India

  • As per Global TB Report of 2021, India is the leading contributor, accounting for 24% of the 10 nations’ combined 74% share of the global gap between estimated TB incidence and the number of newly diagnosed cases that are reported.
  • India appears on all three of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global lists of nations with
    • high rates of tuberculosis (TB)
    • HIV-associated TB
    • multidrug-resistant or rifampicin-resistant TB

About Tuberculosis

  • It is a contagious infection that usually attacks your lungs.
  • It can also spread to other parts of the body such as the brain and spine.
  • It is caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
  • It can spread from person to person through microscopic droplets released into the air.
