India and UK conduct Counter Ransomware Exercise for 26 nations

Context

India’s National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) and the UK Government in collaboration with BAE Systems successfully designed and conducted the Cyber Security Exercise for 26 Countries.

About Virtual Cyber Exercise on Ransomware Resilience

  • It was Conducted by India’s National Security Council Secretariat(NSCS) and the UK Government in collaboration with BAE Systems 
  • The exercise has been conducted as part of the International Counter Ransomware Initiative- Resilience Working Group which is being led by India under the leadership of the National Cyber Security Coordinator (NCSC).
  • The aim of the exercise is to allow participating countries to test their capability to respond to a major ransomware incident and to demonstrate the benefit of sharing information and collaborating during a major cyber incident.
  • Participating countries: Around 26 countries and their respective organizations participated in the exercise.
  • It is based on the Energy Sector in which the respective National Cyber Crisis Management Teams of the participating nations will have to deal with a ransomware attack on multiple electricity distribution companies. 

About National Security Council (NSC)

  • The NSC is an executive government agency tasked with advising the Prime Minister’s Office on matters of national security and strategic interest.
  • It was established by the former PM of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 19 November 1998, with Brajesh Mishra as the first National Security Advisor.
  • Prior to the formation of the NSC, these activities were overseen by the Principal Secretary to the preceding Prime Minister.
  • Organizational structure:
    • The NSC is the apex body of the three-tiered structure of the national security management system in India.
    • The three tiers are the Strategic Policy Group, the National Security Advisory Board, and a secretariat from the Joint Intelligence Committee.
