History

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) convened the first World Health Assembly in 1948, which called for the establishment of a “World Health Day.” 
  • The first World Health Day was held on April 7, 1950, and it has been observed on that date every year thereafter. 
  • The main goal of the day is to raise awareness about a certain health topic in order to highlight a World Health Organization priority area of concern.

Theme 

  • The theme for World Health Day 2022 is ‘Our Planet, Our Health’. 
    • This year’s theme aims to direct global attention toward the well-being of our planet and the humans living in it.

Right to Health in India

  • Articles 39, 41, 42 and 47 in the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP)contain provisions regarding Health.
  • Article 21 provides for the right to life and personal liberty and is a fundamental right.

Significance 

  • World Health Day is one of eight official global health campaigns marked by WHO.
    • Which include World Tuberculosis Day, World Immunization Week, World Malaria Day, World No Tobacco Day, World AIDS Day, World Blood Donor Day, and World Hepatitis Day.
  • On World Health day WHO organizes international, regional and local events related to a particular theme. 
  • It primarily focuses on universal health coverage by fixing medical infrastructure.

About World Health Organisation (WHO)

  • The WHO was established on 7 April 1948, which is commemorated as World Health Day.
  • It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, with six semi-autonomous regional offices and 150 field offices worldwide.
  • The WHO is a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health.
  • The WHO Constitution, which establishes the agency’s governing structure and principles, states its main objective as ensuring “the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health.”
