World Food Safety Day 2022

Context

World Food Safety Day is celebrated globally on June 7 every year as per the World Health Organization (WHO). 

History

  • The United Nations General Assembly established World Food Safety Day in 2018 to raise awareness of this vital food safety issue. 
  • The WHO and Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) jointly kickstarter World Food Safety Day in collaboration with the member states and other stakeholders.
  • It was first celebrated in 2019, to strengthen the commitment to scale up food safety made by the Addis Ababa Conference and the Geneva Forum in 2019 under the umbrella of “The Future of Food Safety”.
  • It aims to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks, contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development.

Theme

  • This year, the theme is ‘Safer food, better health’. 
    • WHO also launched a campaign to inspire global participation.
  • The theme of 2021 was, ‘Safe food today for a healthy tomorrow’, stressing that production and consumption of safe food has immediate and long-term benefits for people, the planet and the economy.

Significance

  • World Food Safety Day on 7 June aims to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks, contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development. 
  • This international day is an opportunity to strengthen efforts to ensure that the food we eat is safe, mainstream food safety in the public agenda and reduce the burden of foodborne diseases globally.

About The World Health Organisation (WHO) 

  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that looks into matters of public health.
  • Established on April 7th, 1948, (a date now being celebrated every year as World Health Day).
  • Its headquarters is located in Geneva, Switzerland. 
  • There are 194 Member States, 150 country offices, six regional offices.
  • It is an inter-governmental organization and works in collaboration with its member states usually through the Ministries of Health.
  • The WHO provides leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends.

About Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)

  • It is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger and improve nutrition and food security.
  • It was founded in October 1945 and is headquartered in Rome.
  • It maintains regional and field offices around the world, operating in over 130 countries.
  • It also conducts research, provides technical assistance to projects, operates educational and training programs, and collects data on agricultural output, production, and development.
  • Composed of 197 member states, the FAO is governed by a biennial conference representing each member country and the European Union, which elects a 49-member executive council.
