About Bald Eagle

  • Bald Eagle (Haliaeetusleucocephalus) is not bald and they get the name from an older meaning of the word, "white-headed".
    • National Bird: It is the national bird of the United States of America. It also appears on the US seal.
  • Range: Its range includes Canada and Alaska, United States, and northern Mexico.
  • Habitat: It is found near large bodies of open water which has an abundant food supply and older trees for nesting.
  • Protection measures: The continuous protection efforts which include banning DDT pesticides have resulted in the bird flourishing.

Conservation Status

  • The U.S. government removed the Bald Eagle from the list of endangered species in 1995 and transferred it to the list of threatened species.
  • At present its IUCN conservation status is Least Concern.
