The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying is going to organise the ‘Sagar Parikrama’ programme to address the problems of coastal fisherfolk in a phased manner.
About the initiative
- Sagar Parikrama will focus on the sustainable balance between the usage of marine fisheries resources for the food security of the nation and the livelihood of coastal fisher communities.
- It will also put efforts to adopt measures for the protection of marine ecosystems.
- It will involve the engagement of the National Fisheries Development Board, Department of Fisheries, Government of Gujarat, Indian Coast Guard, Fishery Survey of India, Gujarat Maritime Board and fisherman representatives.
- The event will witness the sanctions/certificates related to the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana awarded to the progressive fishermen, fish farmers and young fishery entrepreneurs.
- This will set a suitable example of the Government’s attentiveness towards transforming the fisheries sector and formulating fisheries management plans along with required reforms in the regulatory framework ensuring effective governance in fisheries.
- It will also discuss the ways to increase the livelihood opportunities for the fishermen.
- It will exert enormous importance on issues like livelihoods, climate change, commerce and security.
- The first phase will span from Mandvi to Porbandar covering the entire coastline of Mandvi on the coast of the Arabian Sea in the Kutch district of Gujarat situated at the estuary where the river Rukmavati meets the Gulf of Kutch.
Sagar Parikrama
- It is a navigation journey to be conducted in all coastal states/UTs through a pre-decided sea route to demonstrate solidarity with all fisherfolk, fish farmers and concerned stakeholders.
- The journey shall focus on the sustainable balance between the utilization of marine fisheries resources for food security of the nation and livelihoods of coastal fisher communities and protection of marine ecosystems.
- This initiative has been launched as a part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava’ (Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava is one of the significant initiatives of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence and the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements).
