About the Smart City ranking
- The ranking is released by the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs.
- Four Rajasthan cities, Udaipur, Kota, Ajmer and Jaipur have secured the 8th, 11th, 29th and 36th rank among the 100 smart cities of the country.
- A new method of ranking was adopted for the assessment work .
- Work completed, tendering process and fund utilisation are among the new parameters.
- The ranking takes into account various factors such as
- the smart city plan implementation
- the ongoing work and tendering process
- the utilisation of funds
- provision of the utility certificates to the Centre from time to time
Smart Cities Mission
- The Government of India has launched the Smart Cities Mission on 25 June 2015.
- The objective is to promote sustainable and inclusive cities that provide core infrastructure and give a decent quality of life to its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment and application of ‘Smart’ Solutions.
- The focus is on sustainable and inclusive development and the idea is to look at compact areas, create a replicable model which will act like a lighthouse to other aspiring cities.
- The implementation of the Smart Cities Mission is done by a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be set up at city level in the form of a limited company under the Companies Act, 2013.
- It will be promoted by the State/UT and the Urban Local Body (ULB) jointly both having 50:50 equity shareholding.
