Context
India has become the first country globally to start commercial production of Nano Urea by signing the MOU between NFL and RCF with IFFCO for ‘Transfer of Technology’ of Nano Urea Liquid fertilizer.
About the Nano Urea Liquid fertilizer
- IFFCO developed nanotechnology-based Nano Urea (Liquid) fertilizer to address the imbalanced and excessive use of conventional Urea.
- This nanofertilizer is indigenously formed for the first time in the world at IFFCO through proprietary patented technology.
- Nano Urea is a source of nitrogen that is an essential nutrient required for the proper growth and development of plants.
- Nano Urea contains nanoscale nitrogen particles which have more surface area (10,000 times over 1 mm Urea prill) and several particles (55,000 nitrogen particles over 1 mm Urea prill), this makes it more impactful.
- It has more uptake efficiency than conventional urea.
Safety & regulations
- Nano Urea (liquid) is safe for humans, animals, birds, rhizosphere organisms, and the environment at the recommended levels of application.
- Nano Urea (Liquid) has been notified as to the nanofertilizer under the Fertilizer Control Order(FCO) by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, DAC & FW, Government of India.
Significance of the MOU
- ramp up the production leading towards consistent supply that will result in faster adoption and more savings to farmers and government subsidies.
- preserve the health of the soil, prevent water pollution, and air pollution as it is an ecofriendly product.
- bring down the direct cost and the transportation cost.
- enhance the income of farmers by better production.
- reduce the import of conventional urea in India.
- supplement the other less hazardous commercial sources of urea such as Neem Coated Urea.
Neem Coated Urea
- It is the most important nitrogenous fertilizer in the country because of its high N content (46%N). Presently all the Urea manufactured in the country is Neen coated.
- Technical specifications:
- This does not rapidly hydrolyzeand prevent ammonia injury to seedlings.
- Ministry of Agriculture in July 2004, included the Neem Coated Urea in FCO.
- As per the notification dated 25.05.2015, all the urea producers in the country shall now be producing 100% urea as NCC to improve crop productivity and reduce the subsidy.
