About the species

  • Scientific name: Teleostei Synbranchidae
  • The hypogean eel is called Rakthamichthys Mumba– the Mumbai blind eel. 
  • This is the first completely blind subterranean freshwater fish species to be characterized from Maharashtra and the Northern western Ghats.
  • Genus: Genus Rakthamicthys (endemic to India).
  • Present known habitat: Mumbai well

Features of the species:

  • lacks eyes, fins and scales
  • has jaws equal in forward extent
  • different gill aperture
  • crescentic-shaped cephalic
