- “Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update for 2020-2024” has forecasted that the annual mean global temperature has a chance that it will exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) in at least one year between 2020-2024.
- The 1.5 C mark is the level to which countries have agreed to try to limit global warming as per 2015 Paris accord.
- The agreement sets a goal of keeping global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit), ideally no more than 1.5 C.
- The earth’s average temperature is already over 1.0 C above the pre-industrial period. The last five-year period (2015-2019) has been the warmest five years on record.
