- A hatcheryis a place for artificial breeding, hatching, and rearing through the early life stages of animals.
- Hatcheries produce larvaland juvenile fish, shellfish, and crustaceans, primarily to support the aquaculture industry where they are transferred to on-growing systems, such as fish farms, to reach harvest size.
- Some species that are commonly raised in hatcheries include Pacific oysters, shrimp, Indian prawns, salmon, tilapiaand scallops.

Significance of the patent
- RGCA, the research and development arm of the government-owned Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), had applied for the patent in 2011.
- This will be helpful in fulfilling the seed requirement of farmers who intend to undertake diversified species for aquaculture instead of concentrating on shrimp farming alone.
