About the Unique Plastic-Mixed Handmade Paper

  • The project was executed by the team of scientists at the KVIC’s Kumarappa National Handmade Paper Institute (KNHPI), which has received the patent certificate by the Controller of Patent, Intellectual Property of India.
  • The plastic-mixed handmade paper is developed under the Project REPLAN (REducingPLAstic from Nature).
  • Under the project the plastic waste is de-structured, degraded and diluted to be used with the paper pulp to make handmade paper.
  • The technology uses both high & low density waste polythene that adds extra strength to the paper and reduces the cost by up to 34%.
  • The product is recyclable and eco-friendly.
  • KVIC has developed products like carry bags, envelopes, files/folders, etc. through the plastic mixed handmade paper.

Significance of the project

  • This will help reduce the plastic waste from nature.
  • It will help fight the menace of single-use plastic.
  • Protection the environment alongside creating sustainable employment.

What is a Patent?

  • A Patent is a statutory right granted for an invention for a limited period of time to the patentee by the Government.
  • It is given in exchange of full disclosure of his invention and it excluding others, from making, using, selling, import the patented product or process for producing without his consent.
  • In Indian system, patent is granted for a term of 20 years from the date of filing of application.
    • For application filed under the national phase of Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), the term of patent will be 20 years.
  • The patent system in India is governed by the Patents Act, 1970 which was amended by the Patents (Amendment) Act, 2005 and the Patents Rules, 2003.
  • The Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trademarks (CGPDTM) grant the patent.
    It comes under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • Apart from patenting it assign trademarks, designs, Geographical indication, manage intellectual property rights and patent information.
  • Patent protection is a territorial right and it is effective only within the territory of India.
    • There is no concept of the global patent.

International arrangements for patents

  • Budapest Treaty: This is an international treaty that governs the deposition of microorganisms, cell lines etc in the international approved authority which is approved by WIPO for the purpose of patent applications in any country who is a party to it.
  • Paris Convention: The Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property was established in 1883.
  • Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT): The PCT is an international treaty with around 150 Contracting States. Under this treaty a patentee seek patent protection of an invention simultaneously in a large number of countries through filing a single international patent application.However, granting of patents remains under the control of national or regional patent offices.
