Context

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) is observed globally on April 6.

History 

  • Creating a historical link to the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, 6 April was declared the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 2013, and has been celebrated each year since 2014.

Theme

  • The global theme of IDSDP 2022 is, “Securing a Sustainable and Peaceful Future for All: The Contribution of Sport,” which creates an opportunity for the Day’s celebrations to promote the use of sport as a tool to advance human rights and sustainable development. 

Constitutional provisions for Sport in India

  • Constitutionally, sports form a part of Entry 33 of the State List, under Article 246 of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution of India.
  • Constitutionally, sport is a state subject.

Important Government schemes promoting sports

  • The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has formulated the following schemes to promote sports in the country:
  • (i) Khelo India Scheme
  • (ii) Assistance to National Sports Federations
  • (iii) Special Awards to Winners in International sports events and their Coaches
  • (iv) National Sports Awards, Pension to Meritorious Sports Persons
  • (v) Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Sports Welfare Fund
  • (vi) National Sports Development Fund
  • (vii) Running Sports Training Centres through Sports Authority of India
