About the International Day of Human Space Flight

  • Declaration: April 12 was declared as the International Day of Human Space Flight by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011.
  • It was started to mark the inception of the space era of mankind.
  • First human flight: On April 12, 1961, a Soviet cosmonaut named Yuri Gagarin became the first person to orbit the Earth.
  • Objective: It was started to celebrate each year as the beginning of the space ear for mankind.
  • To reaffirm the contribution of space science and technology
  • To ensure the aspiration for the use of outer space for the peaceful purpose

Indian Human Spaceflight Programme 

  • The Indian Human Spaceflight Programme was started in 2007by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
  • It aims to develop the technology that was needed to launch crewed orbital spacecraft into low Earth orbit.
  • The first uncrewed flight is planned with a spacecraft called Gaganyaan for December 2021on a GSLV Mark III rocket.
    • Later on, the manned flight will be launched.
  • India will become the fourth nation to conduct independent human spaceflight after Russia, United States, and China.
