- The Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) is located in Hanle near Leh in Ladakh.
- The observatory has one of the world's highest located sites for optical, infrared and gamma-ray telescopes.
- Operated by: Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore.
- Situated at an elevation of 4,500 meters, it is currently the 9th highest optical telescope in the world.
