India's rate has dropped by six points from last year to 90th in the Henley Passport Index.

About Index

  • The Henley Passport Index is the original ranking of all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa.
  • Originally created by Christian H. Kaelin (chairman of Henley & Partners), the situation is based on special data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which maintains the largest and most accurate database of air traffic information.
  • It was introduced in 2006.
  • The index covers 227 destinations and 199 passports.

Global Rankings

  • Japan and Singapore were top of the list this year, with their passport holders allowed to travel visa-free in 192 countries.
    • For the third year in a row, Japan won the top spot.
  • South Korea and Germany share second place.
  • Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan and Yemen are among the least powerful.

Indian position

  • India, in the 90's, lost its passport holders in 58 countries.
  • India shares this level with Tajikistan and Burkina Faso.
