China is planning to draw a “separation line” on the Mount Everest to prevent the coronavirus from being spread by climbers ascending Nepal's side of the mountain.

Context

China is planning to draw a “separation line” on the Mount Everest to prevent the coronavirus from being spread by climbers ascending Nepal's side of the mountain.

About the separation line

  • A separation line is to create a simple structure and a light division between both the sides.
  • The separation line on the Mount Everest will be set up by a team of Tibetan mountaineering guides.
  • Objective: To stop the climbers attempt to reach the summit from the Chinese side.
  • The climbers ascending the north side of the mountain from China will be prohibited from crossing the line or coming into contact with anyone or any objects on the south, or Nepalese, side.
  • The point where climbers from both sides would come close is the summit, which is a small space where climbers spend only a few minutes to take photographs and take in the 360-degree views.
  • Reason: China wants to stop the spread of coronavirus from being coming to its side.

Mount Everest

  • It is Earth's highest mountain above sea level that is located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas.
  • The China–Nepal border runs across its summit point.
  • Its elevation (snow height) of 8,848.86 m was most recently established in 2020 by the Nepali and Chinese authorities, which is 86 cm taller than the 8,848 m accepted globally so far.
  • It is believed that the height of Mount Everest is increasing at a very slow rate. This is because of the northward movement of the Indian tectonic plate that is pushing the surface up.

Verifying, please be patient.
