Context

A nano biomaterial is synthesized with a stable link between two molecules or a hormone nanoconjugate called hydroxyapatite-Parathyroid. It is expected to help tissue regeneration.

  • The research was funded by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India.

About the developed nano biomaterial

  • A polymer system is developed for replicating the bone marrow microenvironment by co-culturing bone cells on its surface.
  • This would enable the researchers in therapeutic screening of the target molecules.
  • The research is based on the formation of materials and techniques used to fabricate scaffolds for skull and facial bones (craniomaxillofacial bone) tissue engineering.
  • The nano material is formed out of innovative and multidisciplinary approaches, including advanced materials, nanobiotechnology, cell biology, computer-assisted techniques, robotics, and artificial intelligence tools, offer huge potential for augmentation of craniomaxillofacial tissue engineering.
  • Bone marrow, dental pulp, alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, umbilical cord, endometrium, breast milk, and adipose tissue are the major and well-studied sources of stem cells.

Stem Cells

  • Stem cells are cells with the potential to develop into many different types of cells in the body. They serve as a repair system for the body.
  • Types: embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells.
  • Stem cells are different from other cells in the body in three ways:
    • They can divide and renew themselves over a long time
    • They are unspecialized, so they cannot do specific functions in the body
    • They have the potential to become specialized cells, such as muscle cells, blood cells, and brain cells

Verifying, please be patient.
